Photographer Jerry Mathiason and Mill City Museum have embarked on a project to document change on the Minneapolis riverfront, selecting historic photos from the city's beginnings in the 1850s and 1860s and shooting photographs of the modern landscape from the same vantage point. The pairs of then and now photographs reveal the dramatic changes to the city over the past 150 years, including the disappearance of St. Anthony Falls, changes in transportation, bridge collapses past and present, the growth of a small village into a major city, and continually evolving uses of the Mississippi River. The exhibit is supported by a grant from the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Board. The exhibit is located in the museum’s central Mill Commons, and is free and open to the public during regular museum hours through May 12, 2013.

Created by two-time Tony Award-winning actor Mark Rylance in collaboration with Duluth poet Louis Jenkins, a master of prose poetry whose work is regularly featured on A Prairie Home Companion, this world premiere features original music by Claire van Kampen (Peer Gynt). Nice Fish centers on two men who have gone ice fishing on the last day of the season; the ice is melting and the DNR is watching. They are hoping for something essential, immortal, when a construction worker roars across the ice on his snowmobile, spear, dynamite and fancy dress in hand! And the last blizzard of the season is about to begin...

adapted from Homer
by Lisa Peterson and Denis O'Hare
translation by Robert Fagles
directed by Benjamin McGovern
Seating in the Dowling Studio is general admission and begins 30 minutes before curtain.
Every time I sing this song, I hope it's the last time." So says The Poet as he digs deep to sing Homer's epic story of war, honor, violence and the Greek siege of the city of Troy. He's told this story for centuries, conjuring the heroes and battles for different cultures and eras. Now in the shadow of war in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, he unleashes the story's power for a modern audience. As The Poet recites, comments and chats, he compels his audience to connect with his story, to feel what he feels, to believe in the importance of this story. Maybe if he tells the story one more time, the violence will end.
An Iliad premiered in 2010 and has been lauded by critics across the country, including The New York Times this spring: "Mr. O'Hare and Ms. Peterson have telescoped the mighty expanses of Homer's great poem into an evening that scales the conflict of the Trojan War down to an intimate solo show illuminating both the heroism and the horror of warfare." Guthrie regular Stephen Yoakam (The Burial at Thebes, The Winter's Tale ) will portray The Poet under the direction of Benjamin McGovern.

The exhibit is located in the museum’s central Mill Commons, and is free and open to the public during regular museum hours through May 12, 2013.

adapted from Homer
by Lisa Peterson and Denis O'Hare
translation by Robert Fagles
directed by Benjamin McGovern
